Blloku, Tirana: what to know

Blloku is the best-known area of Tirana. Until 1991 it was closed to the public and reserved for the communist leadership; today it is the centre of cafés, restaurants, shops and offices. It is a few steps from the main boulevard. High demand and limited space keep the price per square metre here among the highest in the country.

Blloku is about 800 metres south of Skanderbeg Square, 10 to 15 minutes on foot, in Administrative Unit no. 5. It is part of Tirana e Re.

What is in the area

Today it is the area of cafés, bars, restaurants and shops, and the centre of the capital’s nightlife. The former residence of Enver Hoxha is here. Beside the area, along the Lana, is the Selman Stërmasi stadium.

Housing and history

Until 1991 Blloku was a closed neighbourhood reserved for the leadership of the Party of Labour; ordinary citizens were not allowed in. After it opened, many apartment buildings went up alongside the earlier villas.
