Liqeni i Tiranës, Tirana: what to know

The area of Liqeni Artificial (the Artificial Lake) surrounds Parku i Madh, the Grand Park, to the south of the centre. Its closeness to the park and to Blloku makes it one of the most sought-after and most expensive areas of the capital.

Where it is

The Artificial Lake and the Grand Park are at the southern edge of the city. The park begins at the end of Bulevardi Dëshmorët e Kombit, behind the University of Tirana, by Rruga e Elbasanit. Around it are Blloku and Tirana e Re to the north, Komuna e Parisit and Selitë to the west, Liqeni i Thatë and Sauk to the south and east.

What is in the area

Inside the park are the Church of St Procopius, the Palace of Brigades (now the Presidential Palace), the tombs of the Frashëri brothers, the amphitheatre, the Botanical Garden and the Zoo. The park has about 120 kinds of trees, shrubs and flowers.

Housing and history

The lake was created in 1955 by a dam 400 metres long, built by volunteer labour, and the park was laid out in 1955–1958. The surrounding area is housing set in greenery; running, cycling and walks by the lake are part of its everyday life.
